Dispatches from Chicago

Aly and I decided to take a couple days off work and head to the frozen tundra of Chicago. We took a Chicago Architecture Foundation tour of the Rookery yesterday (where the docent asked me, “Are you an architect?” Answer: No.) and attended a lecture on Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks at the Art Institute.

Afterwards, we headed up to Lakeview to have dinner with Joe at Casbah Café. We’re staying with Adrian and Sara, who graciously offered us a place to crash while we were in town.

Today, the plan is to go to the Field Museum (free February admission!) and to the lake, where awesome photos of floating ice await. First, though, is breakfast (brunch?) at Orange.

Day two
After sleeping in, we took the Brown Line—which swoops dramatically through the cityscape as it makes its way towards the Loop—downtown. After having lunch at Giordano’s, we took a CTA bus to the Field Museum. The place was crawling with kids, as it was the last day of free admission. Workers were also setting up an event after regular hours, meaning that the floor was bustling with activity. The best part of the museum was probably the old school entomological display cases on the ground floor.

Afterwards, we took a short walk over to Solidarity Drive and walked behind Shedd Aquarium. Unfortunately, most of the ice had apparently melted, so we were only able to snap a few photographs of the remainder. We ended our trip by taking the 146 back up to Lakeview (via Michigan Ave. during rush hour).

Day three
Woke up and got breakfast with Joe and Virginia at Horizon Café, where we debated the merits of bland Chicago hash browns and McLuhan’s ideas about media (among other things). Afterwards, we headed back down Broadway to the Threadless brick and mortar store and found two T-shirts we liked.

Day four
The plan—as of now—is to do the following on our last day in Chicago:
* Breakfast at Orange, or possibly dim sum (mmm… chiu chow) at Shui Wah in Chinatown
* Investigate whether we can still get tickets to a Brown Line L tour, done by the Chicago Historical Society.
